October is coming to an end, meaning that Adopt A Shelter Dog Month is officially over. For those unaware, the celebration was launched by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) 40 years ago to bring awareness to pups in shelters and rescues. According to the ASPCA, over 3 million dogs are placed in shelters annually, meaning many furry friends need a forever home. For this reason, here at Woof Republic, we believe that Adopt A Shelter Dog Month should be celebrated all year round by helping dogs in need.

We believe it is important to observe National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 23. According to nationalpitbullawarenessday.org, this pawsome holiday was established 14 years ago as a way “to change perceptions and stereotypes about bully breed dogs.” The holiday’s founder Jodi Preis, who runs the Tennessee-based pit bull rescue Bless the Bullys, wanted to “restor[e] the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier.”

How You Can Help Change Denver's Breed Specific Law

In 1989, Denver, Colorado introduced a city-wide ordinance that has banned dogs who appear to be more than 50% pit bull. This Breed-Specific Legislation was enacted with the intention of protecting people from dog attacks. However, the law is just not effective and has cost taxpayers millions of dollars. It has also contributed to the euthanization of thousands of pit bulls, which is absolutely heartbreaking.
