What DOGust Means For Rescue Dogs
If you adopted your canine companion from a shelter, you likely don’t know their actual birthday, which is a shame because dogs are really into birthday parties. Thankfully, thirteen years ago, North Shore Animal League America decided to make August 1st “the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs and rescue pets,” as reported by the Union Springs Herald. The annual celebration is known as DOGust.
Now, the way you decide to celebrate the special occasion is totally up to you! We recommend, however, taking your dog to some of their favorite places. For instance, if they love going to the local park, pack a picnic basket full of all of their favorite treats and spend the day enjoying each other’s company. If your dog is more on the adventurous side, take them on a hike or head over to a local dog beach.
You can also throw a party for your pup! Now, COVID-19 regulations may make this a little tough. However, you can either have a small gathering outside or celebrate the joyous occasion via Zoom. Whatever you decide, be sure to purchase some festive decor like pup-themed streamers and balloons. Don’t forget to bake a cake! If your precious pup has a sweet tooth (and a salty tooth), consider making a Sweet and Salty Dog Cake. The recipe for this delicious dessert can be found on the Parsnips and Pastries website.
Another way to celebrate DOGust is to shower some love on dogs who are up for adoption. Consider calling your local rescue to see if they need any supplies, treats, or toys. You could also volunteer your time and offer to take some pups from the rescue on walks.
If you are willing and able, you may want to consider becoming a pup parent to a rescue. If that is too much of a commitment for you at the moment, you can look into being a foster pup parent.
