Is Popcorn Healthy for Dogs?

I am not ashamed to admit that I have a serious addiction to popcorn. I eat at least one bowl a day, if not more. Now, my dog is also aware that this snack is quite delectable. Before I let her snag a few pieces of popcorn, I needed to make sure it was safe for dogs.

According to the American Kennel Club, popcorn can be an acceptable treat for dogs as long as it is plain. That means no salt, butter, oil, or seasoning, as it “can lead to intestinal upset in dogs.” Also, too much oil and butter can cause your furry friend to gain an excess amount of weight, which can be harmful to their overall health. Speaking of which, PetMD reported that pup parents should be careful with how much popcorn they are giving their pets. While the food isn’t necessarily calorie dense, two pieces are more than enough for dogs under 20 pounds. Larger breeds, weighing over 90 pounds, only should have “a handful” of pieces.

While dogs can eat plain popcorn, owners should be watchful when their dogs consume it. The American Kennel Club reported that popcorn kernels can be a “choking hazard.”

If you have decided that popcorn may not be an acceptable treat for your canine companion, we’ve got you covered. There are plenty of other healthy snacks that your furry friend can enjoy. For instance, Broccoli is a good source of vitamin C for your pooch. Celery, carrots, green beans, and spinach also have plenty of vitamins and minerals can improve your pup’s health. Just be sure to contact your dog’s vet before introducing new foods into their diet.
