Can Dogs Eat Grapes?
Now, I am a big proponent of giving my dog some scraps. As a responsible pup parent, however, I do my diligence in researching what food is safe for our furry friend’s delicate stomachs. For instance, all dog owners need to know the dangers of grapes, concords, and raisins. Unfortunately for our furry friends, they should never consume the tasty fruit.
According to Pet MD, any variety of grapes or raisins, even cooked, pose a serious threat to pups, as “Grape toxicity is linked with kidney damage,” which can be fatal. If your dog is suffering from grape toxicity, they will likely appear lethargic, experience vomiting, have disinterest in food, and have more of an interest in water. They may also have seizures or changes in their urination. And it does not seem to matter how many grapes your dog consumed or the size of your furry friend. For this reason, it is imperative that you immediately call their veterinarian if you believe they have eaten a grape or raisin. From there, you may be instructed to rush your pet to the vet clinic, where vomiting will likely be induced. VCA Animal Hospitals also reported that your pup may have blood work done and be under observation at a pet hospital until they recover.
While grapes are completely out of the question, there are some fruits that your furry friend can enjoy. For instance, according to the American Kennel Club, watermelon is a-okay to feed our furry friends as long as you remove the seeds. Not only is watermelon delicious, but consuming the fruit is quite beneficial, as it has "vitamins A, B6, and C, and potassium." It is also not that high in calories, meaning it is a suitable treat even for dogs on a weight loss journey. Pups can also indulge in bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, peaches, raspberries, and strawberries, as reported by WebMD. That sounds like a pretty darn good fruit salad to me! Just be sure to contact your vet before you introduce new foods to your furry friend.
