9 Super Fun Dog-Friendly Activities to Do on Halloween
I don’t know about you, but my furry friend is obsessed with Halloween. (She loves a good costume.) Unfortunately, she can’t participate in most Halloween-themed activities. I’m not sure what my neighbors would think if I – a childless adult – took my dog trick-or-treating. Also, any haunted attractions are out of the question. While she is only 10 pounds, she will take matters into her own hands (paws) if someone scares her, especially if it’s on purpose.
Thankfully, there are still plenty of ways I can celebrate Halloween with my furry friend.
Participate in a Costume Contest
As previously mentioned, my dog loves wearing costumes. This year, I’ll be looking out for any local canine costume contests to participate in.
Show off Your Dog’s Costume at the Dog Park
If you are unable to find a dog costume contest in your neighborhood, no worries! Simply dress up your furry friend and take them to the local dog park. They’ll be sure to get plenty of attention from onlookers. Extra points if you and your furry friend have a matching costume!
Throw a Dog-Friendly Halloween Party
If you are friends with other dog owners, consider hosting a pup-friendly Halloween party. You’ll need some dog-themed Halloween decor and of course, plenty of treats!
Run a Dog-Friendly Halloween-themed 5K
If you and your dog are the athletic types, sign up for a dog-friendly Halloween-themed 5K. While this seems like a niche activity, it’s surprisingly popular.
I don’t think my furry friend and I will run a 5K together. However, if we did, we would constantly brag about it until next Halloween.
Make Some Halloween Treats
I’m not ashamed to admit that I am addicted to candy, especially during the Halloween season. However, I feel pretty guilty when I’m devouring a bag of Reese’s pumpkins, and have nothing to offer my furry friend.
For this reason, I will make dog-friendly Halloween-themed treats so she can also have something delicious on All Hallows’ Eve. For instance, I'm sure she'll enjoy these Pumpkin Pawfection treats or these Candy Corn Dog Treats.
Have A Spooky Movie Marathon
My dog and I are major movie buffs. (She actually went to film school). For Halloween, we recommend watching “Scooby-doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” “Frankenweenie,” and of course, “Spooky Buddies,” the fifth film in the “Air Bud” franchise.
Take Your Dog Pumpkin Picking
Look to see if your local pumpkin patch allows dogs. If so, head over with your canine companion! Just be sure to let your furry friend pick out their very own pumpkin.
Play Bobbing for “Apples”
I, personally, am not a fan of bobbing for apples. I find the whole experience harrowing, as I have limited lung capacity. Also, I have gotten sick every single time I have played the game. It is extremely unsanitary.
That being said, there’s no harm in filling a bowl of water and placing your dog’s ball (aka apple) inside. Your furry friend will have a blast as they try to retrieve their toy.
Have Your Pup Help Pass Out Candy
If your pup can handle children, have them help pass out candy. My pup will not be participating in this as she dislikes kids, especially those who are “stealing her candy.”
