Why Your Dog Keeps Licking Their Paws — and How to Help

If you are a pup parent, you may have noticed your dog excessively licking or biting their paws. And you may be wondering why your furry friend has picked up this harmful habit.

There are a couple of reasons why your canine companion can't leave their paws alone. For instance, your pup may be suffering from fleas, dealing with allergies, have been injured, or is just bored.

Because your dog is unable to communicate their exact needs, you'll need to consult your veterinarian. After your pup gets their diagnosis, you'll have a few options on how to keep them from licking their paws.

If your furry friend has fleas, they will likely be given prescription medication. However, if your pup has allergies, there are a few different routes you can take. An easy way to limit your pup’s exposure to common allergens is to regularly clean their surroundings, like washing their plush toys and bedding every week. It’s also a good idea to ditch carpets. But if you can't, just vacuum every few days! Your veterinarian may also recommend antihistamine medications, steroid medications, allergen-specific immunotherapy, or hypoallergenic shampoo.

Now, if your dog is injured, your veterinarian will treat the area accordingly.

Also, if your pup is just licking their paws out of boredom, try increasing their exercise and stimulus. Consider taking your furry friend on daily walks and having rousing games of fetch. You can also purchase interactive toys, so they have something more productive to focus their energy on.
