Why Is My Puppy Crying?

Becoming a new pup parent is an exciting yet stressful experience. This is especially true for those who have not previously owned a puppy. If you are not constantly surrounding yourself with dogs, like myself, (you can find me at my local dog park every day after 5 p.m.), you may find their behavior confusing.

For instance, similar to human babies, babies of the canine variety will cry or whine for seemingly no reason. To calm your little furry friend down, you will need to find the root of their discomfort.

According to the North Kenny Veterinary Hospital, your puppy could be whining for several reasons. For instance, your pup could be bored. To remedy that, you could give them a walk or offer them a rousing game of fetch.

Some puppies may whine because they are expressing stress or fear. For instance, your pup may cry out in response to an unexpected noise. To calm your furry friend down, give them gentle, reassuring words. However, try your best to refrain from giving your pup pets, as you do not want to reward the behavior.

Spruce Pets also reported that puppies could be crying because they feel ill or are experiencing pain. If that is the case, your furry friend may also appear lethargic, have changes in their appetite, or have difficulty with mobility. Dogs crying out due to illness or injury should be examined by their vet immediately.
