Turns Out the Real-Life Dog From ‘Resident Evil’ Was a Little Too Good at Being Scary

My dog and I are major horror fans, so you'd best believe we were first in line for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.

While we thought the movie was a blast, we didn’t love the scene involving the dog because of, well, what happens to the pup.

But we can rest assured that what happened was all just movie magic and the furry actor is a-okay.

It actually turns out that handsome pup was extremely good at his job. Perhaps, a little too good.

In a September 2026 interview on the Popcorn Podcast, Cregger discussed the moment when Bryan (Austin Abrams) manages to run up a ladder before the dog can bite him. According to Cregger, unlike his on-screen counterpart, the real-life pup could easily make it up the ladder, making it a frightening experience for Abrams.

“The first take we did, that dog ran, and it climbed right up the ladder. It could climb. And that dog was terrifying. So that was a really scary moment when it went right up to the top, so we actually had to leash it, so it was not able to continue to do that. But crazy,” shared the director.
