Is Bone Broth Good for Dogs?

Both my dog and I were born and raised in the Los Angeles area. This means we are privy to every health fad, including the increasing popularity of bone broth. For years, I have heard that the broth can be quite beneficial. However, I have never partook, as I am a vegetarian. My dog, however, is a proud meat eater and has been interested in enjoying the savory soup.

Thankfully for her, dogs can safely consume bone broth, as reported by the American Kennel Club. While pup parents could fix up their own, some dog food brands offer canine-safe broth in convenient packaging.

According to the AKC, feeding your dog bone broth, which has a decent amount of Glycine and collagen, could improve their liver function, enhance their immune system, help with joint issues, and improve the look of their coat. It is important to note, however, that you should never give your dog animal bones, cooked or otherwise, as it poses a serious choking hazard. First Pet also warned that bone broth is not calorie-dense enough to be considered a full meal for your furry friend. Instead, it should be given as a treat or as a topping for your dog’s kibble. In addition, pet parents should always contact their dog’s vet before making any changes to their diet.
