How To Keep Your Dog Warm This Winter
Winter is just around the corner! While the season can be fun when you are sitting by a fire and sipping some hot chocolate, it can also be a little ruff. This is especially true when you have to take your pup outside for a walk.
As a pup parent, I am always concerned about my dog’s well-being. I’m also from Southern California, where it rarely drops below 60 degrees, so I didn’t know what to do when I moved to a colder climate, and it started snowing. My dog, who is also a proud California girl, understandably did not want to go outside until I figured out how to keep her nice and warm.
Here are some tips I have figured out through trial and error that can be helpful to pup parents during the winter season.
Buy Your Dog A Coat
One of the best ways to keep your pooch warm is to invest in a water-resistant coat for them. Typically, the cost of a dog coat will range from $15 to $70, depending on the style and brand. I personally put my dog in a puffer jacket, similar to this one from The Dog Outdoors, which costs $39.99.
Purchase Winter Boots
If you live in an area where it regularly snows, you need to protect your pup’s precious paws. For this reason, you should get your furry friend some winter boots. According to the American Kennel Club, the boots should have textured soles “with a good grip for traction.” Ideally, the shoes should also have “adjustable Velcro straps” to ensure they properly fit your pooch. The AKC also suggests purchasing QUMY Dog Boots, Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots, Pawz Water-Proof Dog Boots, RUFFWEAR, Grip Trex Outdoor Dog Boots with Rubber Soles, or DOG Australia Warm Winter Dog Boots.
Go On Quick Walks
While it is important that your pup gets exercise, it may not be wise to take prolonged walks in freezing temperatures. Instead of going on your regular half-hour walk, consider only going outside with your dog for 10 minutes at a time.
Refrain From Taking Your Pup Outside After A Bath
When you do take your pooch out, make sure they are not wet. Otherwise, your pup will feel even colder, and no one wants that.
Dry Your Dog Off Once They Are Inside
If your pup gets wet because of snow, rain, or sleet, make sure that you dry them off immediately once they come inside. You should also have some blankets prepared for them after their walk.
