How To Help Your Dog With An Upset Stomach
Being a pup parent is a full-time job. Obviously, it’s the best job in the whole wide world, but it does come with quite a few responsibilities. For instance, dog owners have to make sure that their canine companion is in good health.
Unfortunately, it is quite common for furry friends to have an upset stomach. According to Pet MD, your dog may be vomiting, having diarrhea, or experiencing constipation for a number of reasons. For instance, they may be dehydrated or stressed. However, it’s most likely that your pup got their adorable little paws on an item they should not be consuming.
“Dogs are curious like kids; they’re always putting things in their mouth. Vomiting and diarrhea are signs that a dog’s body is trying to expel something that shouldn’t be in their system. In a healthy dog, it’s a protective mechanism of the body that’s totally normal,” explained Dr. Kathy Backus, DVM.
If your pooch is experiencing intestinal upset it is best to contact the vet, as they may have gotten into something toxic or have a serious illness, like inflammatory bowel disease. You should also speak to the veterinarian prior to trying any at-home remedies. Once you get the okay, there are some ways that you can help your furry friend feel better.
Have Your Furry Friend Fast
Following a stomach upset, it may be best to have your dog refrain from eating for about half a day.
“If the gastrointestinal (GI) system is having a tough time, you don’t want it to digest things,” explained Dr. Backus to Pet MD.
Make Sure Your Dog Is Getting Enough Water or Ice
After having stomach issues, your pup will likely be dehydrated. For this reason, you should make sure that they are drinking enough water. If the water is causing more vomiting, allow your dog to lick ice.
Give Your Pup Pumpkin
According to the American Kennel Club, fresh pumpkin or canned unseasoned pumpkin puree is great for dogs, who have digestive issues, as the “soluble fiber content in pumpkin adds bulk to your dog’s stool by absorbing water.” In addition, pumpkin’s “fiber fermentation produces beneficial fatty acids that supply energy to cells, stimulate intestinal sodium and water absorption, and lower the pH level of the large intestines.”
Try Probiotics For Dogs
According to Bon Vet, dog-safe probiotics may be beneficial to pups with upset stomachs because they “prevent[s] gastrointestinal problems, and boost the immune system after disruption from illness, infection, antibiotic treatment, or other stressors.”
Give Your Dog A Plain Meal
Luckily for dogs, a delicious meal of plain chicken and rice can improve digestion problems.
