How To Give Medication To An Uncooperative Dog
If you are a pup parent, your furry friend has likely been prescribed medication. As a responsible dog owner, you want to ensure that your canine companion takes their prescription drugs. However, it can sometimes be easier said than done. After all, most dogs do not enjoy consuming pills. (Unless they are the type of canine companion who will eat everything in sight.)
To make your and your dog’s lives a little easier, here are some tips to ensure that even the most uncooperative pup takes their medication.
Hide The Medication
Most dogs will not think twice about eating a tasty treat. For this reason, consider hiding their pills in a soft treat, wet food, some canned pumpkin, or even cheese. Another approach is using a treat as a chaser for the medication.
Open Their Mouth
If your dog simply won’t be tricked, you may have to insert the pill in their mouth. To prevent starling your dog, you’ll want to first touch their mouth and reward them with a tasty treat. From there, you can gently grasp their lower jaw and pry their mouth open. After that, you will place the pill on their tongue and clamp their mouth closed while you rub their throat.
Ask Your Vet For Other Types of Medication
Sometimes dogs will simply refuse to swallow a pill no matter what. If that’s the case, talk to your vet to see if your furry friend’s medication can be compounded into a liquid form.
