Fall Foods That Your Dog Can Safely Enjoy

With summer coming to an end, there are so many delicious fruits and vegetables finally in season. Fortunately for Fido, dogs can enjoy quite a few autumnal foods. That being said, check with your pup’s vet prior to making them a fall-themed feast.

“As with human nutrition, canine nutrition should be individualized. Consult with your veterinarian before making any dietary changes,” suggested Kathleen Standafer Lopez, a registered dietitian nutritionist, while speaking to the AKC in 2018.

Pumpkins are a quintessential fall food. While your furry friend can’t enjoy a pumpkin spice latte, they can indulge in cooked or canned pumpkin. Not only is the squash delicious, but it can also alleviate some of your pup’s stomach issues. According to the AKC, “soluble fiber content in pumpkin adds bulk to your dog’s stool by absorbing water, and fiber fermentation produces beneficial fatty acids that supply energy to cells, stimulate intestinal sodium and water absorption, and lower the pH level of the large intestines.”

Pears

Great news, pups can have pears. However, it is imPEARative that you don’t give them canned pears as they typically have an excess of added sugar.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are another tasty fall treat that you can give your furry friend, as long as it is skinless and not raw.

Figs

Figs are another fall fruit that is a-okay to feed your furry friend.

Apples

Your dog will be pleased to find out that they are able to have apples, as long as you don’t give them its core. My pup was so thrilled about the news, that she’s going to participate in a bobbing for apples competition as soon as possible.

Parsnips

Dogs can freely enjoy parsnips. The root vegetable actually is quite beneficial, as it has a significant amount of vitamin B6, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
