Can You Give Your Dog Turkey?
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, there’s an increased likelihood that you are currently in possession of a turkey. What’s equally as likely is that your dog is salivating at the sight of said turkey.
Before you give in to your dog’s puppy eyes and slice them a piece, there are a few things you should know.
While speaking to People magazine in November 2024, Dr. Aya Alt, the medical director of VCA Broadway Animal Hospital and Pet Center, said that while Thanksgiving food, like turkey, “seem safe” to give your furry friends, you should refrain from doing so.
“[S]ince they're usually prepared with seasonings (onions, garlic) and large amounts of cream and butter, they can cause toxicity or gastrointestinal upset," said Dr. Alt to People magazine.
Dr. Alt said, however, that you can give your dog small pieces of "cooked, unseasoned turkey.”
The American Kennel Club also reported that you shouldn’t give your dog turkey skin because its “high fat content can cause pancreatitis.” In addition, you should be careful not to accidentally give your dog turkey bones as it is a choking hazard and could cause serious intestinal issues.
Please check with your vet before adding anything new to your dog’s diet!
