10 Best Dog Breeds for Families

As a child, I was completely and utterly obsessed with dogs. I’ll be transparent, I did not have any human friends. I did, however, have a kinship with nearly every pup I encountered. I also had a 500-page dog encyclopedia I carried with me every day at recess. Who needs playmates when you are busy memorizing dog breeds?

Despite my love of canine companions, my family did not adopt a dog until I was 10 years old. While I was disappointed to not get a furry friend earlier, I now understand my parents' decision. They were well aware that dogs and kids do not always mesh.

If you are in a similar boat and aren’t sure if a dog would be compatible with your child, we’ve got you covered. It’s important to note that some breeds are more suitable for families than others.

Here are the top 10 best family dog breeds.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Who can help but melt at the sight of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? These pint-sized companions are known for their sweet demeanors, especially around children.

Labrador Retrievers

Labs are a favorite among parents and there’s no secret why. The furry friends are loving, energetic, and playful.

Golden Retrievers

I can’t think of a more quintessential family dog than a Golden Retriever. These furry friends are super sweet, smart, and always down for a rousing game of fetch.

Brussels Griffons, who are loyal and high-spirited, are just too stinkin’ cute. If your kid happens to be a “Star Wars” fan, prepare to get some extra points — George Lucas based the design for Ewoks on these furry friends.

Collies

Not only are Collies beautiful and intelligent, but they are also sweet companions for children. In addition, they are super helpful if your kid ever falls into a well. (Just some humor for all those “Lassie” fans out there.)

Poodles

I have a personal preference for poodles. My first dog was a gorgeous toy poodle named Molly, and my parents' two senior pups are half-poodles. My dog, a mix of many breeds, is also part miniature poodle.

While speaking to Today in July 2022, Brandi Hunter Munden, vice president of public relations and communications at the American Kennel Club, shared that poodles make excellent pets for children.

“Don’t let the haircut fool you: they can do everything from running, swimming, jumping. All the things the Lab can do, a poodle can certainly do. They tend to do very well with children. They love their families," shared Munden.

French Bulldogs

Obviously, French Bulldogs are adorable. But that’s not the only reason why children love them. This toy breed is calm and always up for a cuddle.

Beagles

Fans of Snoopy are already aware that beagles are amazing. According to Munden, they make a great companion for a child interested in outdoor activities.

Boxers

If you want the perfect playmate for your kid, look no further than a Boxer.

Basenjis

Basenjis are similar to cats, meaning that they are loving but do not require too much attention. These pups also do not bark, which is ideal for families with young children who still need their naps.
