Spring Foods That Your Dog Can Safely Enjoy

My dog and I are looking forward to spring. Not only can we finally dethaw after a harsh winter, but we also love snacking on seasonal produce. While not every spring fruit and vegetable is suitable for her stomach, there are plenty of tasty treats she can try!

(Just a quick disclaimer – be sure to talk to your vet before introducing your dog to new foods).

Artichokes

Here’s a fun little fact about me – one of my favorite foods is artichokes. Growing up, I would often eat steamed artichoke served with a heaping helping of secret sauce, aka ketchup and mayonnaise. Currently, my snack of choice is marinated artichoke hearts straight from the jar, which I highly recommend.

My furry friend did not fall far from the tree and also thoroughly enjoys a good artichoke heart. It’s important to note that dogs should only have cooked, unseasoned, small pieces of this edible thistle.

Asparagus

Asparagus is also one of my go-to vegetables. I, personally, like air frying it with some olive oil and parmesan. While our furry friends can also munch on asparagus, they’ll have to eat it plain. You should also cook it thoroughly and cut it up before serving it to your canine friend.

Beets

I’m a fan of beets, but my dog thinks they are disgusting, so she is not happy that the vegetable is on this list.

I would recommend mashing up boiled, plain beets -- which are high in Vitamin C -- and serving them with your dog's dry food as a special treat.

Carrots

Speaking of Vitamin C, feel free to feed your dog some carrots. According to the AKC, this root vegetable is a great snack to give your teething puppy, “as a way to relieve teething discomfort.”

Mangos

I love mangos, but unfortunately, I have Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome, which means my mouth gets super itchy if I eat it. Thankfully, the allergy wasn’t passed onto my dog, and she can enjoy mangos without any issues. If you are also planning on feeding this delicious fruit to your pup, make sure that you have discarded its peel and pit.
