Meghan Markle Shows Her Devotion to Her Late Beagle Guy in Heartwarming Story

Here at Woof Republic, we’re big fans of Meghan Markle because of how much she adores her furry friends. We’d argue she’s one of the biggest dog lovers in Hollywood.

Don’t believe us? Well, People magazine reported that Professor Noel Fitzpatrick shared that Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, showed off their devotion to their late beagle Guy while speaking to The Times in December 2025.

"Meghan rang me from Canada, where she was living at the time, to say Guy, her beagle, had escaped and had been found with two busted 'wrists' [the carpus]. Would I operate? I agreed, and she brought him over," said the veterinary surgeon. "The duke and duchess sat on the floor. We had cake. Guy was fixed. He lived until January this year, and I had a wonderful note of gratitude from Meghan, which was sweet."

Markle announced Guy passed away in a January 2025 Instagram upload. The post featured several pictures of Guy throughout his incredible life alongside Markle and her husband.

In the caption of the post, Markle wrote she brought home her furry friend after he had been living in “a dog rescue in Canada” a decade ago.

“He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up….and fell in love,” wrote Markle.

She shared that her canine companion had been “referred to as ‘the little guy' during his time in the shelter, because he was so small and frail.” Due to his nickname, Markle decided to give him the name Guy.

According to Markle, the sweet boy “was the best guy any girl could have asked for.” She also noted that he was by her side throughout major life events.

“He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom….he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort,” continued Markle.

Markle also mentioned Guy’s 2017 severe injury.

“He endured a terrible accident shortly before I moved to the UK which had him undergoing surgeries for several months and unable to leave the clinic. Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr Noel Fitzpatrick said he could do it. H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end,” wrote Markle. “I will always be grateful to Noel and his team, the team at Queen West Animal Hospital in TO, our vets now, and my friends and community: Thank you for loving him so.”

Markle ended her message by expressing gratitude to her late pup.

“Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know ❤️‍🩹,” continued Markle.

Guy’s story from being a rescue dog to a beloved member of the royal family was adapted into the children’s book, titled His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog

Markle also owns a lab called Pula and an 8-year-old beagle called Momma Mia. Momma Mia was one of 4,000 beagles bred to be test subjects for the contract research organization Envigo. After over 70 animal welfare violations were discovered at the Cumberland, Virginia breeding facility, the Humane Society of the United States was granted the ability to rescue the dogs in July 2022.
