Is Wet Food Bad for Dogs?
I’ll be the first to admit that my dog is on the spoiled side. Try as I might, I can’t help but give in to my furry friend’s whims. For this reason, she sleeps in my bed, has 40 toys, and goes on multiple walks a day. However, I am pretty strict about her diet. For the past eight years of her life, she has been eating strictly dry food. However, I know that she desperately wants to try wet food.
According to the VCA Animal Hospitals, there are some benefits to serving your furry friend wet food. For instance, it is less calorie-dense than dry food, meaning that your furry friend can eat a more significant amount. In addition, the publication reported that picky dogs are more likely to enjoy wet food over traditional kibble. While my dog isn’t exactly a fussy eater, she does occasionally reject her dry food when she is stressed or in an unfamiliar place. The AKC recommends pet parents give their furry friends wet food in those instances.
Tufts University also reported that dogs who suffer from urinary tract infections are often given a diet of wet food because of its high water content. In addition, dogs with dental issues or missing teeth have an easier time-consuming wet food. However, dry food does an excellent job of assisting in the elimination of tooth tartar. In addition, dry food is usually more cost-effective.
VCA Animal Hospitals also suggested that dry food is more suitable for dogs who need to be served specific portions, as it is easier to weigh out.
