5 Ways to Observe National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month

As animal lovers, we never want to see our furry friends suffer, which is why we believe it is important to observe National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. Sixteen years ago, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals -- more commonly known as the ASPCA -- established the annual campaign, which is celebrated in April.

Sadly, animal abuse is not unusual, even in the year 2022. According to National Day, 10 million animals “die each year in the U.S. from abuse alone.” Sixty-five percent of “all abused animals” happen to be canine companions.

Now, you may be curious about how you can help animals in need during National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. Don’t worry, we got you covered. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate NPCA month.

Adopt Rescue Animals

While it is very tempting to take home an adorable puppy from a pet store, you should refrain from doing so. Unfortunately, these little guys are likely from puppy mills, which “are dog breeding operations that put profit over the health and well-being of the dogs,” per The Puppy Mill Project. To ensure that you are not unintentionally supporting a business that harms dogs, you should adopt, not shop.

Consider Fostering

If you are unable to adopt, consider fostering a furry friend. Fostering a dog is a rewarding experience. Taking on the role of a dog foster parent means that you are saving lives. To a sweet pup down on his luck, you’re a superhero. By crashing at your pad, the pooch will get an adequate amount of socialization and feel less stressed out in an environment outside of the kennel. He can be rehabilitated and be a step closer to finding his forever home. You are also lessening his chance of staying in an animal shelter for the rest of his life.

Become A Volunteer at Your Local Rescue

If I could, I would be constantly at an animal shelter. When I was a university student, I couldn’t commit to being a volunteer, but I spent every Saturday at a no-kill shelter, and just hung out with all the pups. It was truly my best college experience. Well, that and Waffle Night -- which consisted of eating all-you-can-eat waffles at the dining hall every Tuesday. I digress.

Call or email your local rescue to see if they need any volunteers.

Consider Purchasing Cruelty-Free Products

A relatively easy way to help lessen the abuse of animals is to start buying cruelty-free products. I have been committed to only purchasing cruelty-free makeup since 2015. My favorite brands are Fenty Beauty, Too Faced, and E.L.F. Cosmetics.

Be Vocal Online

During the month of April, ASPCA encourages animal lovers to post about National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month on social media.
