Dog-Friendly Hotel Guide: Kimpton Hotels

Traveling with dogs can be a fun and comforting experience if you have the right accommodations. Lucky for you, Kimpton Hotels are some of the most dog-friendly hotels around. Their unique approach aims to create an environment where dogs are front and center with a red-carpet experience. In this feature we will take a look at why Kimpton Hotels are a top choice for dog-friendly travel.

Lauren and I have stayed at two Kimpton Hotels with Pixie. The first time was at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in the Westwood neighborhood in Los Angeles, and the second time was at the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland. The Westwood location was a more traditional hotel room and layout while the location in downtown Portland had a lot of character and the rooms were more colorful and somewhat quirky.

Many locations have a dedicated four-legged Director of Pet Relations to greet your pooch on arrival and make the lobby even more fun to hang out in. These live-in dogs are a nice touch whether you are traveling with a dog or not. Many locations have a list near the entrance where they capture all the names of the current dogs staying at the hotel.

What I love most about Kimpton is the fact that there are NO fees and NO weight limits for dogs. Pixie is nearly 60 lbs so it’s not always easy to find a hotel that will take her in, and Kimpton is our go-to spot.

Here’s what your dog receives at most Kimpton Hotel locations during your stay:

  • Plush dog bed

  • Food and water bowls

  • Placemat

  • Poop bags

  • Door hanger letting others know your room is occupied by your pup

  • Treats in the lobby

  • VIP treatment!

For example, at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar in Westwood, Los Angeles, Pixie received this amazing plate of dog treats and fruit along with a lovely card from the front desk. Pixie didn’t care about the spelling of her name, so long as she didn’t have to share the treats with anyone else.

Another challenge I find when traveling with our dog is finding places nearby to play or go for a walk. It is especially hard if you’re in the city and there’s just not a lot of grass. If you have to get very creative to let your dog poop while staying in the city, it just doesn’t feel inviting. Luckily, Kimpton Hotels has their concierge curate a list of nearby dog-friendly restaurants, nearby parks, groomers, and pet shops.

Kimpton Hotels often have an evening reception where guests receive complimentary drinks. Dogs are welcome to join. Dogs and drinks are a great combination when you’re kicking your feet up on a trip!

I have nothing but great things to say about the dog-friendly philosophy of Kimpton Hotels and highly recommend their hotel brand for anyone traveling with a dog of any size. I had nothing to worry about knowing the staff are so dialed in and accommodating.

Be sure to snap a photo of your dog in front of the welcome board during your visit!
