Can My Dog Eat Corn?
A few days ago, I spilled a bag of frozen corn on the floor. My dog frantically ran from the other room and managed to eat probably 15 pieces of corn within a couple of seconds. This is an extremely impressive feat, given that she is only 10 pounds. Also, I don’t think she’s ever had corn before – so good for her for trying something new.
However, I was extremely concerned because I wasn’t sure if corn was toxic for our precious pups. Thankfully, Pet MD confirmed that my dog would be fine, as long as she didn’t have an allergy to the food. Also, the publication warns that it’s best to keep an eye on your dog while they consume pieces of corn, as it can potentially get caught in their throat.
Not only is corn delicious, but it can also be beneficial to our furry friends, as it contains vitamins, minerals, and plenty of fiber.
It is important to note that you should never feed a corncob to your dog because it can cause damage to your furry friend’s intestines. Also, only serve plain corn to your canine companion, as butter and salt aren’t great for furry friends, no matter how hard they try to convince you otherwise.
Plain popcorn is also fine to feed dogs in moderation. In a 2015 video on behalf of the dog food company Just Food For Dogs, veterinarian Dr. Laura Searle-Barnes shared her thoughts about giving dogs popcorn.
“I personally don’t believe that popcorn is in any way a negative thing for pets to get hold of. It’s potentially a little bit like junk food and it could cause a gastrointestinal upset maybe but are there any toxicities associated with popcorn? No,” asserted the veterinarian.
Dr. Searle-Barnes then revealed that she often gives popcorn to her canine companions as a treat.
“When I crack open some popcorn, my dogs wait for me to give it to them and they’re both okay,” said the vet.
Be sure to get your vet’s go-ahead prior to allowing your furry friend to munch on some corn or popcorn.
