Can Dogs Eat Shrimp? Here’s What Dog Owners Should Know
For the past couple of years, I’ve rung in the New Year by eating one of my favorite foods, a full platter of shrimp cocktail. And no, I don’t share. (Luckily for me, I married someone who hates shrimp, so I don’t even look selfish when eating my shellfish).
Well, I should clarify that I did share a little bit of shrimp with my dog. Because she’s my precious princess, and she really wanted some.
And before anyone gets upset, I never give my dog anything that isn’t safe for canine consumption. Also, it was a very small piece.
According to the American Kennel Club, dogs can safely eat a small piece of shrimp as long as it's fully peeled, cooked, and unseasoned. (Unfortunately, that means your pup will have to skip out on the cocktail sauce.) Pet parents will be pleased to know that shrimp has a good amount of protein and beneficial vitamins.
Just be sure to talk to your dog’s vet before introducing anything new to their diet, like shrimp!
