Can Dogs Eat Berries?

I’ll be transparent, my dog wasn’t too pleased when we moved from California to Oregon. She loves the sun and isn’t too happy with all the rain. However, there are some perks. For instance, there are so many fruits, specifically berries, that are native to the state. We’re surrounded by blackberry bushes at all times. Fortunately for my furry friend, several kinds of berries are absolutely fine for dogs to eat.

Here are some berries that your canine companion can snack on. Just a quick disclaimer – be sure to talk to your pet’s vet before introducing any new food into their diet.

Blueberries

This antioxidant-rich berry is a wonderful treat to give your furry friend. From personal experience, I can attest blueberries are a great bribing tool. I managed to convince my dog to stop barking at a child yesterday by hand-feeding her two blueberries.

Raspberries

Raspberries are fairly safe for your furry friend to consume. According to the American Kennel Club, you should be careful with how many raspberries you give your dog, as “they do contain small, naturally occurring amounts of xylitol.” For this reason, pups should only eat “eight ounces of fresh or frozen raspberries at any one time.”

Strawberries

My dog is absolutely obsessed with strawberries, which is great because the berry is high in “fiber and vitamin C,” per the AKC.

Blackberries

According to PetMD, pups are free to enjoy blackberries. However, the publication warns pet parents to keep an eye on how many blackberries their dogs are consuming, as the fruit is high in sugar and fiber. PetMD reported that if your furry friend has more than a couple of blackberries, they may have stomach issues, which is never pleasant.
