A Missing 85-Year-Old Woman is Found by Police Dog

Colorado search and rescue K-9, Mercury, is being recognized for his heroic actions.

People magazine reported that the very good boy and his handler, Officer Austin Speer, were given the task of helping a missing 85-year-old woman. The official Facebook page for the City of Greenwood Village Government gave details about the situation. According to the May 3 post, Officer Austin Speer and his trusty canine companion went out looking for the unnamed individual “after police received a call reporting an 85-year-old woman had gone missing for 2 hours.” Mercury was able to locate “the missing woman clinging to a tree down a steep ravine where she could not be seen from the roadway or canal.” Once she was found, she was “returned safely to her family thanks to the hard work of Officer Speer and Mercury.”

The post also reported that “Mercury joined the [Grass Valley Police Department] a year and a half ago for this specific purpose, in addition to his skills in narcotics detection.”

The upload also included a brief body-cam video that showed Mercury excitedly rescuing the woman. Officer Speer can be heard assuring her that the dog “was friendly.”

“We’re going to get you home, okay?” said the police officer.

Several Facebook users applauded Mercury in the post’s comments section.

“Mercury deserves a steak sandwich dinner. I know it’s his job but he did it so quickly. Hero Mercury!!” shared a commenter.

“Amazing Job!! Thank you for your hard work in rescuing this woman!! You and your k-9 saved her life,” added another.

Another individual stated that his mother was the woman who Mercury saved.

“This is my mom and I am so grateful for Mercury and Officer Speer, the kind and professional dispatch gal I spoke with and all involved on this team effort to save my mom who was ‘gassed out’ after trying to climb this hill and unable to move. I had been searching for her for two hours and Mercury and officer Speer found her in 10 minutes: UNBELIEVABLE! It was like watching a Navy Seal extraction: I am so grateful to live in City of Greenwood Village Government,” wrote the social media user.
