What To Do If Your Dog Is Lost Or Missing
Losing a dog is one of the most heartbreaking experiences a pup parent can go through. If your furry friend is missing, try your best not to panic. Instead, focus on finding your canine companion with the help of these simple steps.
Immediately Look in Your Area
If your dog has been missing for under an hour, go around your neighborhood, either by foot or by car. Consider asking your neighbors if they have seen your furry friend out and about.
Post on Social Media
Head over to your town’s local Facebook pages and make a post notifying residents that you have lost your pet. Provide a picture and describe your furry friend. If you feel inclined, you can also offer a reward.
Make Posters
Fliers may usually be the way to go in this situation. However, you may want to consider making larger posters, as they will be more eye-catching. Include contact information, important details about your furry friend, and a few pictures.
Contact Local Shelters
Contact local shelters to see if they have found your furry friend. Another option is to visit the shelters’ websites, as your pooch may be featured as an adoptable dog. However, it is probably in your best interest to go to rescues’ locations, as the websites may not be up to date. While you may be discouraged if you don’t find your canine companion within your first few visits, stay vigilant. According to the Public Information Coordinator of Front Street Animal Shelter, Ryan Hinderman, “it sometimes takes a few weeks for dogs to show up in shelters.”
“Check your local shelter at least once every three days. Remember to check all local shelters. Go online and visit the shelter because sadly only one out of three dogs are picked up by their owners, likely because owners give up too soon,” said Hinderman.
