The Stars of 'Star Wars' and Their Adorable Dogs
As massive Star Wars fans, you best believe my dog and I love May the Fourth. To celebrate the big day, we thought we’d spotlight some of the biggest dog lovers in the galaxy (far, far away).
Without further ado, here are the stars of the Star Wars franchise and their canine companions.
Carrie Fisher

The late, great Carrie Fisher had an adorable therapy dog named Gary. The very good boy often attended premieres, panels, and fan events with her. After her untimely passing in 2016, Gary retired from his duties as a therapy dog. Unfortunately, the adorable pup died in 2025.
Hayden Christensen

Confession – growing up, I was afraid of Hayden Christensen because of his convincing portrayal of Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader. Thankfully, he seems like a very nice man, unlike his Star Wars counterpart. In fact, he is a major animal lover.
In a recent interview, he noted that he has “kept quite a few animals” on his farm, including a few dogs. He then shared a humorous story about having two pregnant dogs, who ended up having 14 puppies in total at one time.
Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman portrays the lovely and tragic Padmé Amidala in the Star Wars prequel films. The known animal lover has two rescue pups named Sunday and Penny.

The Boba Fett actor is a proud pup parent to a dog named Zeus.
Mark Hamill

I adore Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, mostly because in interviews, he talks about R2-D2 as if he were real. The actor also happens to be a massive dog lover. In March 2021, People magazine reported that the actor took to Instagram to introduce his dog, Molly Mae, who previously lived at the non-profit rescue Tobie’s Small Animal Rescue.
Adam Driver
Adam Driver, who played Darth Vader’s moody grandson, Kylo Ren, is a major dog lover. While speaking to W Magazine in 2017, Driver shared he adopted the rescue pup on his 34th birthday. He explained that he was ranting to his wife, Joanne Tucker, about wanting a dog. Frustrated by his tangent, she revealed she was planning on surprising him with a canine companion. Excited by her revelation, Driver decided to immediately visit a rescue located on Long Island. While at the shelter, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star became enamored with a “pit mix,” who was originally called Fettuccine Alfedro. He explained that he decided to change his name because “he looks like a Moose.”
Pedro Pascal

The love of my life, Pedro Pascal, who plays Grugo’s papa, The Mandalorian, is a massive dog lover. He, at one point, had a precious pup with ears very similar to Baby Yoda, named Edgar.
In a July 2018 interview with GQ, the Last of Us actor revealed that Edgar had destroyed his Oliver Peoples glasses, stating,
“I have lost one pair so I resorted back to a previous pair that has been chewed up by my dog. I had no choice but to go to the movies and drive in chewed-up seeing glasses... It’s not a style choice.”
Katee Sackhoff
Katee Sackhoff, who portrays Bo Katan, has three dogs: Vargas the Chihuahua, Happy the Yorkie, and Nelly Bean the pug.
Manny Jacinto

Frankly, I am very upset that The Acolyte was cancelled after one season. I thought it was a fabulous show with a wonderful cast – especially Manny Jacinto, who played the mysterious and dangerous Qimir. Jacinto got real about the heartbreaking nature of owning a dog in a 2024 interview with Vogue. While speaking to the publication, the actor said his 10-year-old pit bull, Henri, was “kind of on her last legs.”
“She’s 10 now and she’s lived a good life but now, it’s just, the decline… But it’s life,” said Jacinto. “One of the very first lessons I learned when I started acting was the idea of impermanence It won’t do you any good trying to hold onto something, whether it be money or fame or certain highlights in your career. You’re going to have to keep moving past it.”
Ming-Na Wen

Ming-Na Wen, who plays Fennec Shand in Boba Fett and The Mandalorian, is a devoted dog mom to a sweet pooch named James.
George Lucas

One of the best characters in Star Wars is obviously Chewy. What makes him even better is that he was based on George Lucas’ canine companion, Indiana Jones. (The film franchise was also named after the precious pooch).
"I had a large dog named Indiana. A Malamute, an Alaskan Malamute, and he would ride around in the car, in the front seat. Not driving. I loved that image. When he sat in the car, he was bigger than I was. That's where I said, 'That would be a fun character for Star Wars,'" explained Lucas during the 2017 Star Wars celebration.
