Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Adopt Dog Who Once Was A Test Subject

Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, have added to their family of furry friends!

People magazine reported that the couple brought home a 7-year-old beagle named Momma Mia. The adorable dog was one of 4,000 beagles bred to be test subjects for the contract research organization Envigo. Thankfully, all of the dogs will soon be freed, as reported by CNN. After over 70 animal welfare violations were discovered at the Cumberland, Virginia breeding facility — which will soon close — the Humane Society of the United States was granted the ability to rescue the dogs in July 2022. Within about a month, the pups will be taken to different rescues throughout the country.

The overseer of the Beagle Freedom Project, Shannon Keith, shared some information about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with People magazine. The animal rights attorney asserted that Meghan and Harry “are the most loving, sensitive and caring adopters [she has] ever met!”

“We were so honored that they have been supporting the Beagle Freedom Project and chose to adopt a dog who has been abused,” stated Keith. "They made a point to adopt a rescue named Mia, who most would overlook because she is older, has health issues and is traumatized by her past. I was so impressed by their commitment to animal welfare! They have been following up letting us know how well Momma Mia is doing in her new, amazing home!"

The couple has two other dogs, Oz and Guy. Guy is a sweet beagle who Meghan adopted through Petfinder in 2015. The rescue pup was originally living in Kentucky at the Montgomery County Animal Shelter but was later moved to A Dog’s Dream Rescue, located in Ontario, Canada.

The cutie occupied Meghan when she moved to the UK. In 2017, it was reported that Guy severely injured himself, breaking his hind legs. Thankfully, the pup was able to make a full recovery. Guy’s story from being a rescue dog to a beloved member of the royal family has been adapted into the children’s book titled “His Royal Dogness, Guy the Beagle: The Rebarkable True Story of Meghan Markle’s Rescue Dog.”
