Summer is officially upon us! While I like spending hot, humid days inside blasting as many fans as possible, my canine companion has other plans. Like most furry friends, she enjoys cooling off at a pup-friendly pool or a local dog beach.
Before you take your furry friend out for a swim, be sure they are familiar with the water. Here are some tips on how to teach your canine companion to feel confident while dog-paddling in a pool.
Use Treats & Toys To Entice Your Furry Friend

Thankfully, dogs instinctively know how to swim. However, many pups get nervous around pools. Famed trainer Zak George recommends enticing your furry friend to go in the water by playing with their favorite toys around the pool. You can also use treats if they are not interested in toys.
Make Sure Your Furry Friend Is Calm
Speaking of playing before your dog goes into the water, you should wear them out just a little. You can either play a rousing game of fetch or go for a walk. You’ll just want to make sure that they are not overly excited so it will be easier for you to guide them during their first swimming lesson.
Put Your Pup In A Life Vest
Before your furry friend goes into the pool, put them in a life vest suitable for dogs. While canine companions should be able to doggy paddle naturally, this will help them remain buoyant. Many pup parents prefer vests with handles so you can grab hold of your furry friend.
Teach Your Dog How To Swim In A Calm Area

Keep other dogs away when you introduce your furry friend to a pool. According to Pet Basics, your pooch should learn how to swim in a calm, quiet area without any distractions.
Start Swimming In A Shallow Area

Pet Basics recommends starting your dog’s swimming lesson at the shallow end of the pool. As Fido becomes more comfortable, have him swim slowly to the deep end.
Make Sure That Your Dog Does Not Consume Too Much Water

There’s a good likelihood that your dog will assume the pool is a giant water bowl. While your furry friend is swimming, make sure they are not consuming or accidentally inhaling too much water, as that could result in water intoxication.
Give Your Pup Plenty of Praise
