How To Celebrate National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day
National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day is observed on April 30. While there is not much known about the origins of this holiday, it’s worth celebrating. In the United States, the shelters are overcrowded, which unfortunately leads to many dogs being put down. The ASPCA reported that “approximately 3.3 million” precious pups are taken to shelters “each year” and 670,000 end up being euthanized.
One of the best ways to honor National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day is to bring home an animal from your local shelter. I can tell you from personal experience that rescue dogs make for incredible companions. However, some people are concerned that shelter dogs are “too damaged” to be good pets. This is just not the case. Dogs are incredibly resilient, and with some TLC (and professional training if needed), they will make a fine addition to your family.
Now, not everyone can financially or emotionally commit to adopting a dog, which is super understandable. There are ways that you can still help out shelters on this holiday. For instance, consider donating some new toys or food to your local shelter. We recommend calling ahead to see what they specifically need.
You can also volunteer at a shelter. Plenty of places are looking for people to help socialize shelter dogs so they will have a better chance at adoption.
If you already have a shelter dog, spend the day pampering them. Take them to the dog park or a dog beach. Also, allow them to have full control of the remote. (This may mean that you may have to watch all 13 movies from the Air Buddy cinematic universe).
