The Real Reason Dogs Howl

If you are a pup parent, you probably have witnessed your furry friend howl. While there is somewhat of a misconception that only certain breeds are howlers (beagles and hounds come to mind), every canine companion is capable of vocalizing in this manner.

According to Veterinary Centers of America, the act of howling is actually an evolutionary trait. Wolves will let their packs and potential adversaries know “their whereabouts” by howling.

Now, your precious pup may start howling for many reasons. The American Kennel Club reported that howling may be a sign of separation anxiety. However, you shouldn’t immediately jump to the conclusion that your pup has anxiety. Instead, check to see if they have some of the other symptoms, like urinating, panting, pacing, as well as having aggressive behavior, and destructive tendencies, such as chewing and scratching, before taking them to the vet.

If you notice that your pup howls when you leave your house because of separation anxiety, there are ways to remedy the situation. For instance, you could make a routine of pretending to leave the house. You’ll want to do all your regular steps, like rummaging for your keys, searching for your wallet, and double-checking you have a mask. Once you do all that, go out your front door and then immediately come back. Upon your quick return, give your pup plenty of praise. Ideally, this repeated process should alleviate some of your furry friend’s stress, as she should recognize that getting ready for the day doesn’t mean you’ll be gone forever.

It is also worth mentioning that howling can be indicative that your pup is in pain. If your pooch is continually howling for seemingly no reason, it is in your best interest to visit a veterinary office.

The VCA noted that your pup may also howl because of unpleasant or loud noises. In addition, your furry friend may have a desire to howl if they see someone or something unfamiliar that they have deemed to be a possible threat. There also could be a chance your pup is howling simply because they want you to pay attention to them.
