Dogs & Fireworks: How to Ease Anxiety
With 4th of July upon us, it is natural for dogs to be afraid of loud noises. The sounds trigger their nervous system, and they can become anxious and afraid. Running away from the noise is a survival instinct. Remember, to your dogs, the experience of fireworks is different than other natural loud noises, like thunder.
Take the effort to ensure that your dog cannot escape in fear and flee your home. Keep windows and doors shut if possible in order to soften the noises.
For my dog Pixie, I use a homeopathic relaxer called Happy Traveler, which calms her nerves. I give this to her with food to put her at ease. It also helps for extended car trips where breaks may be infrequent.
Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend.
