While the United States is a diverse country, it’s safe to say that a majority of American citizens are fans of dogs. However, it appears some breeds are more popular than others. Here are the top dogs, if you will, of each American state.

Alabama

The citizens of Alabama have a preference for Labradors. According to the American Kennel Club, these furry friends are known for their friendly dispositions and athleticism. The short-haired dogs weigh approximately 50 to 80 pounds and come in black, chocolate, and yellow. 

Alaska

Like Alabama, those who live in Alaska are major fans of Labradors. 

Arizona 

Labradors have also won over the citizens of Arizona. German Shepherds come in as a close second. The AKC reported that German Shepherds are excellent companions because of their intelligence and loyalty. The pups, usually weighing between 65 to 90 pounds, have a life expectancy of seven to 10 years. 

Arkansas 

Arkansas residents also enjoy the company of Labradors and German Shepherds. 

California 

California natives are obsessed with French Bulldogs. And who can blame them? According to the AKC, these chic companions are loving toward their owners. They also enjoy playing and behaving like adorable watchdogs. 

Colorado

Those who live in Colorado have an appreciation for Rhodesian Ridgebacks. These regal dogs are often the focus of Renaissance paintings, per the AKC. The protective pups are ideal companions for athletes. 

Delaware

Once again,  Labradors come in as the number one breed in Delaware. 

Florida 

Labradors also love living in the land of citrus groves and Disney World. 

Georgia

The top three breeds in Georgia are Labradors, German Shepherds, and Beagles. 

Hawaii 

Chihuahuas are shown the love they deserve in Hawaii. These small pups are charming and not afraid to express themselves, per the AKC. They also live relatively long for a dog, with a life expectancy of 14 to 16 years. 

Idaho, Illinois, Indiana 

Labradors have charmed citizens in Idaho, Illinois, and Indiana. 

Iowa

Goldendoodles, which are not an official breed by AKC standards, are the preferred pups in Iowa. 

Kansas, Kentucky 

Labradors have beat out every other breed in Kansas and Kentucky. 

Louisiana

Residents of Louisiana agree with Iowa citizens that Goldendoodles are the best dogs out there. 

Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts

Now, I would be concerned that this level of popularity would give Labradors a large ego. Thankfully, they are extremely humble dogs. 

Michigan

Michigan residents don’t care what the AKC says – they have picked Goldendoodles as their breed of choice. 

Minnesota

Clearly, Labradors are welcome with open arms anywhere in the United States. This is especially true in Minnesota. 

Mississippi

Poodles are adored in Mississippi. The AKC reported that these curly-haired pups come in a variety of colors and sizes. No matter their size or hue, however, poodles exhibit intelligence and athleticism.  

Montana

Montana loves the pint-sized pups known as Chihuahuas.

 Nebraska

Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers reign supreme in Nebraska. The pups are relatively large for terriers, weighing about 40 pounds. The adorable dogs are devoted to their owners and have a stubborn streak, as reported by the AKC.  

Nevada

Nevada has crowned the American Staffordshire Terrier as the state’s favorite breed. These loyal dogs are intelligent and courageous, per the AKC.  

New Hampshire  

You heard it first – New Hampshire residents love Labradors. 

New Jersey 

Cane Corsos are popular in New Jersey. This unique breed is sweet and willing to do what it takes to protect its family.  

New Mexico 

Goldendoodles are adored in New Mexico. 

New York 

New Yorkers share California residents’ appreciation for French Bulldogs.  

North Carolina

Labrador Retrievers have some major fans in North Carolina. 

North Dakota

Poodles are the preferred pups in North Dakota. 

Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania 

Labradors will feel right at home in Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania. 

Rhode Island

Rhode Island residents know how special American Staffordshire Terriers are. 

South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee

 Labradors have been deemed the best boys and girls in South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee. 

Texas 

Those in Texas have a preference for Blue Lacies. For those unfamiliar, these dogs are prized for their unique coats and sweet disposition, which makes them excellent family dogs. 

Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington 

It’s safe to say that Labradors are the most popular dogs in all of America. 

West Virginia

German Shepherds are the most popular breed in West Virginia. 

Wisconsin

Doberman Pinschers comes in as Wisconsin’s number one breed. The AKC reported that Doberman Pinschers are revered for being “sleek and powerful.” 

Wyoming

Golden Retrievers are extremely popular in Wyoming. Those who have interacted with Goldens are well aware they are sweet and trustworthy, even with small children.
