Actor Chase Stokes opened up about supporting his girlfriend, country singer Kelsea Ballerini, amid her beloved dog, Dibby’s battle with cancer.

While speaking to People magazine on September 25, Strokes said he and his girlfriend have been “just taking it day by day right now” following the news that Dibby has cancer in his heart that is inoperable.

"I mean, it's one of those things that when it happens as fast as it does, you just try to do the next right thing,” said Stokes.

In addition, he said that he and Ballerini are trying "to be as a unit as much as humanly possible” as they navigate this difficult time together.

Today reported that Ballerini revealed her beloved 9-year-old canine companion was diagnosed with heart cancer in an August 29 Instagram Story. 

"The last few days we have discovered that dibby [sic] has inoperable cancer in his heart," wrote Ballerini.

She assured fans that her very good boy is “not in pain.” She also shared that her biggest concern is to ensure that her furry friend is comfortable. 

“We're going to start him on the 'big' meds to try to make sure he can have as many comfortable and happy days (weeks, months) left as possible,” said Ballerini. 

In addition, she shared that the situation is “a complex and emotional time.” She explained that her furry friend has “been [her] baby and [her] steady for the last nine years.” 

“i know so many of you care about him and are sending him prayers and love, and from my whole heart... thank you. he's wagging his tail right now no doubt saying thank you too,” continued Ballerini. 

Ballerini often speaks about how important Dibby is to her. For instance, in a 2020 interview with CMT, Ballerini shared that thinking about Dibby has helped manage her pre-performance nerves. 

“I know that even if I fall on my face, he’s still going to like me. I really think the magic of a dog is that they’ll show up for you and always be happy to see you. And love you no matter what,” said Ballerini.
