How To Celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day
Here at Woof Republic, we love all dogs regardless of their size, shape, or breed. For this reason, our hearts break that furry friends who are considered Pit Bulls get a bad wrap. There are quite a few dog breeds, like American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, that fall into the Pit bull category. Unfortunately, pits are stigmatized and are typically viewed as violent. Many places in the United States have also implemented Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). According to the ASPCA, “BSL is the blanket term for laws that either regulate or ban certain dog breeds in an effort to decrease dog attacks on humans and other animals.” However, these efforts are often misguided and do more harm than good. Because of the negative stereotypes surrounding pits and BSL, these types of dogs are often placed in shelters.
For this reason, we believe it is important to observe National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 23. According to nationalpitbullawarenessday.org, this pawsome holiday was established 14 years ago as a way “to change perceptions and stereotypes about bully breed dogs.” The holiday’s founder Jodi Preis, who runs the Tennessee-based pit bull rescue Bless the Bullys, wanted to “restor[e] the image of the American Pit Bull Terrier.”
There are a few ways to celebrate National Pit Bull Awareness Day. If you happen to own a Pit Bull, it is the perfect opportunity to completely spoil your pooch. We’re talking plenty of walks, tons of treats, and maybe even a trip to the dog park. Also, consider bragging about your pooch on social media. Post a few pictures along with a caption detailing all the ways that your dog is a complete and total winner. Hopefully, you’ll be able to convince any of your followers who have bought into the negative stereotypes surrounding pits that they should give the pups a chance.
You also can volunteer at your local rescue. As previously mentioned, many pups at shelters happen to be pits. By volunteering your time, there’s a good chance that you will make a Pit Bulls day.
Finally, if you are able to do so, consider adopting or fostering a pit bull. So many of these adorable dogs are in need of a forever home. That being said, don’t rush into anything. We recommend going to your local rescue and meeting any of the dogs available. Ask questions about the pups there to see if they would thrive in your household. Most shelters also allow you to go on walks with the dogs, so you will be able to get a better understanding of their personality.
