6 Ways To Prepare Your Dog For When You Go Back To Work

Due to the pandemic, many people were able to work remotely over the past two years. While working from home may not be for everyone, furry friends have enjoyed spending extra time with their owners. Unfortunately for Fido, quite a few businesses are now encouraging in-person work.

The reality of the situation is that most dogs will have difficulty adjusting to their pup parents leaving the house for eight hours (or more) at a time.

Here are a few tips on how to make the situation less painful for your canine companion.

Pretend To Leave Your Pup Alone

You can begin a routine of pretending to leave the house and immediately come back. Do all your regular steps, like finding your shoes, rummaging through your purse to make sure you have a mask, and grabbing your keys. Upon your quick return, give your pup plenty of praise.

This repeated procedure should alleviate some of Fido’s stress, as he should realize that getting ready for the day isn’t necessarily an indication that you will be gone for a long period.

Crate Train Your Dog

While crate training is not for every dog, it may be a good option for anxious pups who are missing their owner. It should be noted, however, that adult dogs should only be in their crate for about six hours at a time.

Wear Your Dog Out

Before you leave for work, make sure you get your dog’s wiggles out. Go on a 30-minute walk with your furry friend or have an intense game of fetch.

To help your dog have a positive association with being left alone, present them with either a treat or a beloved toy each time you go to work.

Consider Taking Your Dog To Daycare

If you are willing and able, you may want to take your furry friend to doggie daycare. Before you pick a place, it’s always good to go for a visit. You’ll be able to see the establishment’s size, cleanliness, and overall vibes.

This may not be a good option if your furry friend is reactive in the presence of other dogs.

Keep Calm Upon Your Return

It’s easy to want to get super excited when you see your furry friend, especially if you have been away from each other for a few hours. However, you’ll want to remain calm when you return from work. This way, Fluffy will hopefully understand that your departure is not a big deal.
